Don't tell me you didn't see this one coming! I have found several blogs linking the Movember men's health campaign and different aspects of the dairy industry, inspired mainly by a dairy manufacturing company in the USA. You can also find it in Cowsmopolitan (ouch!) which is a Canadian dairy magazine and AgWeb, USA again. I tried searching Movember in a few EU dairy company websites, without much success. Shame on the EU, it seems! Prostate Cancer (the main target of Movember) is one of the "big four" cancers worldwide, and incidence rates do seem to be higher in North America than in many parts of Europe (red areas in chart), but that may be related more to methods of detection than other factors. The World Cancer Research Fund and American Institute for Cancer Research jointly concluded that diets high in calcium may increase prostate cancer risk (dairy products were protective for several other cancers). Maybe the North American dairy industry is more proactive? But back to our real interest, the cows. The company that started Mo Dairy actually make double-compartment water beds for cow cubicles. Does that ring bells? The company claims that their water beds turn all cows into "employee of the month" by increasing lying times, preventing swollen hocks and reducing somatic cell count. However, I recall that Jean Margerison presented data at our Copenhagen meeting showing that cows actually don't like them!
