We all read in-flight mags. Squeezed between sweaty bodies and hard plastic seat backs, there's not much else to do. This week I was en route to Bern via Zurich, and SAS gave me a double dose, September and October. I was glad to see that September included an article on Normandy's beaches that merited a cow-shot, whilst the food page featured Thessaloniki and "The Dairy Queen", artisanal dairy products at Mia Feta. However, my favourite farming image was definitely "Meals in Fields", the US idea that restaurant dining should go out to grass, on a large scale. And very pastoral it looks! When I was young and growing up in rural England, several in my primary classes were from farms. Nowadays, all too many kids leave school with no knowledge of farming. How we address that and get dairy farming back into public awareness in a responsible way is something that we all might like to think about. There, now you have something else to pass the time, mile-high (and I've brought October home)! |
